St. Charles Area web page

There are few places where you will find as much as Historic Saint Charles, Missouri has to offer. This charming community, located on the banks of the Missouri River, has been welcoming visitors since 1769.

Early explorers and pioneers made Saint Charles their place of choice for shopping in the 19th century. Today, you can walk those same brick-lined streets, shop in the same buildings, but rather than pelts and barrels of nails, you will find unique specialty items, home accessories, artwork, and many other one-of-a-kind gifts in over 72 individual shops.

Enjoy lunch on the patio at one of Main Street’s many restaurants. Or grab carry-out and have a picnic along the riverfront in Frontier Park.

When evening falls, take a stroll through the Historic District under the glow of antique gaslights or relax to the soothing sounds of horses’ hooves clip clopping along while snuggling in a horse-drawn carriage.

For well over 200 years, visitors have been settling into their comfortable rooms for the night. Our overnight guests have included explorers, pioneers, statesmen and steamboat captains. As evening descends on our Missouri River village, the essence of history and life in a simpler time envelops you. Come and be our guest at one of our many bed and breakfasts or hotels.

Because we’re a smaller city, we pay special attention to safety, comfort, and convenience. Saint Charles is located just 10 minutes from Lambert-St. Louis International Airport with easy access to major Interstates and St. Louis metro area attractions.

Saint Charles is known for its warm welcome, unique historical perspective, and beautiful sites. Whether you’re interested in history, shopping, the arts, or gaming at the casino—there’s so much to do you’ll need more than a day.

Visit the Convention & Visitors Bureau at 230 South Main Street to check out an iPod for the free self-guided historic walking tour. There is also a complimentary trolley in service Tuesdays through Sundays from April through December.
