| Youngstown was one of the first settlements to grow outside Fort Niagara in the late 1700s. Today, visitors to this historic village experience Americana, enjoy waterfront parks and the splendor of the lower Niagara River, and find charming shops, eateries, taverns, and accommodations. Youngstown was also the site of the Battle of La Belle Famille, one of the bloodiest and most decisive battles of the French and Indian War. As a result of this battle, the French held Fort Niagara was again regained by the British. Visitors to Youngstown are invited to participate in a self-guided walking tour of this historic battle. Years 2004 - 2010 are the 250th Anniversary of the war. Although Old Fort Niagara is the site of historic battles and sieges, trading and conquest, today it is an exciting place where the past lives on! Preserved as they stood in the 1700s when France and Britain controlled Niagara, the fort’s structures include the oldest buildings in the Great Lakes Basin. Explore original buildings and fortifications, discover Niagara’s fascinating history through exhibits and displays, enjoy colorful musket demonstrations and living history programs every summer and be inspired by the fort’s magnificent Lake Ontario setting and beautiful lighthouse!
